Beth Duggleby is a lecturer, researcher, maker, silversmith and an illustrator of comic books and visual diaries. She is particularly interested in authorial illustration, narrative and storytelling. Her latest research is focussed on the influence of children’s books on illustrated literature for adults and how illustration can be used for positive social purpose. Through this research, she is looking to understand ’the compassionate’ image, its origins and its potential uses within wellbeing narratives.

Beth’s work has been exhibited internationally and has featured within illustration and creative anthologies. Her comics have previously been shortlisted as finalist and runner-up in the Observer/Cape/Comica Graphic Short Story Prize. Beth has recently (Autumn 2022) co-curated, in partnership with Sunny Bank Mills Gallery; an exhibition of nineteen local, national and internationally recognised illustrators entitled ‘Lullabies in Lockdown.’ The exhibition documented the frontiers of parenthood during the Covid Pandemic and tells a variety of stories in relationship to new parenthood through the eyes of authors and illustrators. The event won funding from Leeds Inspired as part of a series of three shows at Sunny Bank Mills programmed together under the title of ‘Vessel.’
