Undergraduate Placement Year FAQs

What is a work placement?

A placement year is one full academic year where you work in industry during your university degree. The placement year is taken after successfully completing the second year (Level 5) and before starting the final year (Level 6). You are responsible for finding your work placement although help is provided by the University to identify a suitable placement provider. It can be based in the UK or abroad, subject to certain conditions being met.

Why should I consider a placement year as part of my degree?

There are lots of reasons why you might consider a placement year which include:

  • The opportunity to gain practical experience before you graduate.

  • An opportunity to make valuable contacts.

  • Preparation for professional life after graduation.

  • Gaining a perspective that sets you apart from other graduates when applying for graduate opportunities.

Can the placement be abroad?

Yes, with University approval and subject to securing the appropriate right to work/visas.

Are there fees for the placement year?

During your placement year, you remain a Leeds Arts University student and will pay a significantly reduced fee.

Who arranges the placement year?

You find and arrange your placement year. The University careers service will be available to provide help and support.

Can I undertake freelance work as my placement?

No, you must secure a placement with an employer to gain work experience.

What happens if I fail to secure a placement?

If you are unable to secure a placement then you will carry on with completing your degree and enrol onto the third year (Level 6).

How is the placement assessed?

You will submit a report that summarises your experience and with the support of the employer, successful completion of the placement year will be noted on your degree certificate.
