The annual Anthony Earnshaw Prize has been awarded to three MA students who exhibited work at the Beyond the Frame Postgraduate Show 2024.

The bursary prize, now in its eighth year, was set up by artist Patrick Hughes in memory of his friend, the surrealist artist and fellow alumni, Anthony Earnshaw.

Patrick Hughes judged the award this year and awarded first prize to MA Animation’s Luke Mason, and runners-up awards to Lauren Asquith of MA Illustration with Graphic Novel, and Paul Ashton of MA Fine Art.

"This is such an exciting honour and I'm so grateful for all the support from my collaborators, tutors and friends! Seeing people react to all the wonderful films at the postgrad show, or letting me know that my work had inspired or moved them in some way was such an incomparable feeling: that's why I create art. Thank you!"

Luke Mason, MA Animation

"It was great to have been part of an exhibition with so many talented artists and I'm so pleased my work has brought some joy to the shows visitors."

Lauren Asquith, MA Illustration with Graphic Novel

"I’m very pleased to receive the bursary for painting. I feel honoured to, perhaps, in some way, carry the analogue painting baton, which I feel might have been Anthony’s wish. I look forward to seeing the work produced as a result of this great honour. Thank you, Anthony Earnshaw trust."

Paul Ashton, MA Fine Art

"Tony Earnshaw was a poet and a painter and a novelist, an aphorist, and best-known as a maker of original and witty box art. In his memory, as an artist and a surrealist and an anarchist, a life-lover and constant friend, the Anthony Earnshaw Bursary rewards these students for their imagination and talented work."
