Recent BA (Hons) Comic and Concept Art graduate, Flo Woolley, has had their final year project ‘Skin Deep’ picked up for international publication by Silver Sprocket.
Skin Deep is a queer, horror, romance comic set amongst the dim lights and graceful bodies of a nocturnal dance house.
"In a world where appearance and performance are paramount, shy Mareike blends into the decor. Yet when the lead dancer Sona takes an interest in her, Mareike discovers the intoxication of the spotlight… and the sacrifices needed to remain in it."
Silver Sprocket is an independent American publisher championing socially conscious and independently produced comic books, graphic novels, and related arts. During last year’s ‘Next Gen’ degree show, Leeds Arts University alumna, Anna Readman, suggested Flo submit their project to Silver Sprocket as they promote queer, indie comics.
Flo listened, Silver Sprocket picked Skin Deep up, and now it is being published alongside a book launch and signing at OK Comics, Leeds on 19 June 2024 at 5pm.
"My advice to students moving forward would be to submit your work and get it seen as much as you can. I didn’t expect much whilst creating Skin Deep during my final year, and it is absolutely crazy what has come out of it now!"
Flo is also part of The Biscuit Tin Comics Collective alongside three other Leeds Arts University alumni; Celeste Zanatta, Ivy Rae and Aiden Cosmo. The Collective are exhibiting at this year’s Thought Bubble comic art festival on the 16 and 17 November 2024.
