Fashion Design student wins Fida worldwide award 2024

BA (Hons) Fashion Design

BA (Hons) Fashion Design student, Clem Hankin, won the Student Excellence in Art and Print Award 2024 at the 10th Fida Excellence in Fashion, Art and Illustration Awards.

Fida is a globally renowned platform recognising a wide range of talent in the fields of fashion illustration, art, digital image making, moving image and commercial illustration, through awards, exhibitions, books, membership, collaborations and partnerships.

The winners of the 10th Fida awards were announced in an online ceremony held on Friday 22 November, with awards given in eight categories.

"An incredibly difficult selection to judge with an amazingly high standard (as one would expect from Fida). Particularly impressive is the representation of traditional artistic processes and physical methods of expression. The work on display here shows that the current state of fashion illustration and art is thriving and that the future looks to be very exciting."

Ryan Gajda, Fida worldwide 2025 judge

"The submitted work exudes a sense of playfulness and experimentation, while subtly conveying abstract creativity. Clem skilfully embraces traditional drawing techniques, offering a refreshing contrast to a world saturated with digital imagery. The raw materials and natural talent evident in Clem’s work shine through, presenting a timeless quality that celebrates the beauty of handcrafted artistry."

As winner of the Student Excellence in Art and Print Award, Clem will receive a one-year Fida membership, as well as the opportunity to see their work in the 10th Fida Awards Virtual Exhibition and E-book celebrating the best of fashion illustration.

"Winning the FIDA Worldwide award was a surprise and an incredible honour. It was so meaningful to have my work recognised internationally, especially alongside so many talented artists. The recognition has been a huge confidence boost and a source of encouragement for my final year at Leeds Arts University."

Clem Hankin, BA (Hons) Fashion Design student

Clem continued; "I initially wasn't planning to apply, but with the support and encouragement from my tutors, Caroline and Nicola, I took the leap, and I’m so grateful I did. I love how FIDA acknowledges that fashion illustration goes beyond mere documentation of garments; it is a powerful tool for storytelling and creative expression. I’m excited to continue developing my skills in this area and hopefully move forward with more confidence to get involved with more opportunities such as this one."

Clem continues the trend of Leeds Arts University students succeeding at the Fida Awards. BA (Hons) Fashion Design graduates, Heather Sprowson and Cara Murphy were shortlisted at the 9th Fida awards, and Millie Connor won Student Illustrator of the Year at the 8th awards ceremony.
