Illustration graduate runner-up in the Observer/Faber graphic short story prize 2024

BA (Hons) Illustration

Recent BA (Hons) Illustration graduate, Elly Bazigos, has been announced as runner-up in the Observer/Faber graphic short story prize 2024 for her submission 'LANSA Flight 508'.

Each year, Observer/Faber offer artists the chance to see their work in print and win a cash prize via the graphic short story award. As runner-up for 2024, Elly received £250 and her work has been published on theguardian.com.

"The experience has been really encouraging. It is so wonderful to be recognised by industry professionals, but also, I've received lovely comments from people who read the story and really connected with it. That has been my favourite thing about this experience."

Elly continued; "Leeds Arts University Illustration taught me how important it is to keep a personal practice alive alongside professional work. This personal project allowed me to experiment, play and try new things which I can't do when I'm working to client specifications and deadlines. It was so enriching and made me feel more excited about making."

Elly follows the trend of BA (Hons) Illustration graduates succeeding in the short story prize. Fellow alumna, Anna Readman, won the prize in 2023 for her submission 'Dancing Queen'.
