Illustration student creates mural for The Lake District Coast Aquarium

BA (Hons) Illustration

Final year BA (Hons) Illustration student Miles Dyson has painted a large mural for The Lake District Coast Aquarium, Maryport.

Miles painted the mural for the children’s section of the aquarium as a way to build connections with the local community of Maryport. The mural is full of bright colours which reflect the aquarium’s brand colours.

"I wanted to paint something with lots of different sea creatures at the aquarium so children can remember what they’ve seen. There are also 10 prawns hidden in the mural and it’s a fun game trying to find them all."

Miles approached the aquarium and pitched the idea for the mural as part of a module on the BA (Hons) Illustration course to produce a public work of art.

Mark Vollers, the Business Owner of The Lake District Coast Aquarium, said that he had been approached numerous times in the past by people offering to create a mural for the aquarium. He remarked of the final piece of art "What Miles has produced is better than I could have hoped for."

"(The mural is) eye catching and totally relevant as the content is taken from fish and invertebrate species kept within the aquarium, he has managed to pick out the key characteristics that make them all recognisable. The mural has found a home in our 'Wild Solway' centre overlooking a children's activity area where its' vibrant colours and quirky fishy faces have a great relevance to the youthful visitors. Miles planned and worked through this enterprise like a pro, nothing was left out in terms of approval of a choice of drafts, a simple contract of terms and conditions and an ability to deliver on time."
