Second year BA (Hons) Illustration student Louis Martin has been shortlisted for the Penguin Cover Design Award 2024.
Louis was shortlisted for the Adult Fiction award category. He designed a book cover for novel ‘Daisy Jones and the Six’ by Taylor Jenkins Reid.
Louis says of his winning work, "My design was inspired by concert posters from the 1970’s – I sometimes think of book covers as a kind of poster to advertise their books, and it made sense to take inspiration from this for a story about a 70’s rock band. I came up with what I thought was a simple but striking image, using the motifs of Daisy’s red hair and hoop earrings from the book and including some psychedelic typography for the title.”
“Although I was very pleased with my illustration, I was not expecting to make the shortlist! This is the first proper book cover I’ve designed, so the announcement has given me more confidence in my design skills and possibly revealed a path to follow going forward with the rest of my degree and beyond!”
Now that Louis has been shortlisted, Penguin Art Directors have emailed him with individual feedback and further art direction on his cover design.
To proceed to the next stage of the competition, Louis will need to resubmit his work, taking the Art Directors’ comments into consideration, before the final round of judging.
Winners in all three categories will be announced in June 2024.
