Leeds Arts University students exhibit at CANVAS arts festival

BA (Hons) Fine Art

Leeds Arts University students are set to take centre stage at CANVAS, a new community arts festival at Wellington Place.

CANVAS is a month-long community arts festival running from 10 April to 6 May. The festival, which has been launched in partnership with Wellington Place, transforms the central Leeds location into a hub of creativity, featuring student artwork, interactive exhibits, and workshops.

Six large scale canvases created by BA (Hons) Fine Art students will be on display at 6 Wellington Place, Wellington Central, from 10am to 2pm daily during the festival.

Students made the work in response to a live brief set by Wellington Place. The brief asked students to consider the history of the Wellington Place site and the wider Yorkshire region in their designs, and six students were then chosen to produce their final artwork on canvas.

The six canvases have been created by:

  • Megan Burnell, BA (Hons) Fine Art

  • Kian Nutbrown, BA (Hons) Fine Art

  • Tafsia Muzib Dana, BA (Hons) Fine Art

  • Hannah Jones, BA (Hons) Fine Art

  • Ava Joan Sorboen, BA (Hons) Fine Art

  • Ellie Brown, BA (Hons) Fine Art

In addition to the exhibition, The Art Trail celebrates both emerging and established talent from the University, with an opportunity to view artwork by students and recent graduates at various locations around Wellington Place.

Festival visitors can also participate in the Collaborative Paint project. This large-scale ‘paint-by-numbers’ style artwork, designed by BA (Hons) Fine Art student Megan Burnell, invites the public to colour parts of it during the festival. The final collaboratively coloured piece will be permanently displayed at Wellington Place.

An Art in the City Print Fair will run as part of the festival on 2 and 3 May, with 30 stalls featuring work from local artists alongside students from BA (Hons) Fine Art, BA (Hons) Visual Communication, BA (Hons) Photography and BA (Hons) Comic and Concept Art.

“CANVAS provides our students with an incredible platform to showcase their work to a diverse public audience. The open brief allowed for creative freedom, while also encouraging students to consider the rich history of Wellington Place. The challenge of creating such large-scale works has been a rewarding experience, and we can’t wait to see them on display.”

Elli Whitefoot, Assistant Careers, Employability, and Enterprise Manager, Leeds Arts University

With a packed schedule of free events, exhibitions, and interactive experiences, CANVAS promises to be a major new addition to Leeds’ cultural calendar.

All events are free to attend, although some require tickets. For more information and to book, visit www.wellingtonplace.co.uk/canvas.
