BA (Hons) Photography

BA (Hons) Photography student Ben Raine has been shortlisted for Young Railway Photographer of the Year.

The Young Railway Photographer of the Year competition is organised by the National Railway Museum and the Railway Photographic Society, and partnered by Mortons Media Group Ltd, Network Rail, GB Railfreight (GBRf), and Amateur Photographer Magazine.

Entrants are judged in two age categories, 18 and under and 19-25, and are invited to submit a portfolio of six photographs that reflect this year's competition’s theme: Railway 200.

Ben's photographs are from his local heritage railway, The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway which he has a close connection with.

"Trains and heritage railways are something which has been a strong passion of mine and this railway was the first one I visited with my dad at 6 years old. The photographs showcase the steam engines which run/have run on the railway along with some of the 500+ volunteers that play a vital role in preserving our heritage for future generations to enjoy. "

Shortlisted entries will be displayed as part of an exhibition at the National Railway Museum in York as part of the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway.

Ben's shortlisted work will also be featured at Expo 2025 in Japan, exhibited at Locomotion in Shildon and also featured in a book by the Railway Photographic Society.

"Being shortlisted to this competition means a lot to me. It has given me a great sense of achievement and has made me feel really proud of my work. Being shortlisted also gives me the great opportunity to be able to get my photography out there and shared with a wider audience."
