BA (Hons) Fashion Photography graduate, Farid Renais Ghimas, has launched their debut photo-book with publishers Jordan, Jordan at Tokyo Art Book Fair.
During their final year at Leeds Arts University, Farid started working on a project about his upbringing in Indonesia. Farid wanted to create a book which demonstrated his personal identity.
"As an international student going abroad, there is always pressure to be a spokesperson for your country, but in an original way. I was thinking what could I do as an Indonesian male that is different? So, I decided to focus on my family and my relationship with them, but I did not expect such a massive international reach!"
Farid reached out to publishers Jordan, Jordan to help bring his photographs to life, and in May 2024, work commenced on creating Farid’s book 'Angan-Angan Harsa' which translates to 'Dreams of Joy'.
"It was my first book fair experience and it went really well! I was exhibiting next to a big name in MACK publishers and it was just surreal! Meeting new people and audiences at the fair was really useful."
Farid continued; "The Fashion Photography course really helped me with understanding what a good image looks like, and taught me what I wanted my work to look like. Sarah, my tutor, introduced me to the style of Jamie Hawkesworth and Adam Murray who heavily influenced my work and this photo-book."
The book was printed in November 2024 and was released at Tokyo Art Book Fair.
