Fine Art student wins care home mural commission

BA (Hons) Fine Art

First year BA (Hons) Fine Art student Shiffah Hanif was commissioned by Anchor to create two murals for their Berkley Court residential care home in Leeds.

Anchor is a not-for-profit provider of specialist housing and care for those later in life. Working with our Careers, Enterprise and Employability team they set a brief for Leeds Arts University students and recent graduates to create new murals for their shop and café at Berkley Court.

They wanted to make the floor look more like a street for the residents, with clear signage, friendly shop fronts and colourful and welcoming designs.

Shiffah’s mural, 'Memory Lane,' was chosen based on her proposal and design sketches. Her aim with the design was to encourage the residents to use the cafe and shop that was available to them. Shiffah tells us she wanted to make the shopfronts vibrant and interesting - including details like plants, books and photo frames to create interest.

"Having my work commissioned feels amazing, being trusted to bring their vision to life felt like a great honour. I'm grateful to be recognised and only hope that my work is meaningful to its intended audience. If I can do that, I'll feel more than successful with my work."

Shiffah was awarded £1,000 for the commission.
