Marketing Communications graduates shoot TV spot for Makita

BA (Hons) Marketing Communications

Ella Curtis and Emma Simpson, Junior Creative’s at Dentsu Creative and recent BA (Hons) Creative Advertising (now BA (Hons) Marketing Communications) graduates, have made their first TV advert for Makita UK.

Ella and Emma, along with the creative team at Dentsu, launched battery-powered tool brand Makita’s B2B campaign for its gardening tools which aims to challenge the dominance of fuel-powered equipment. 'Feel the Energy' is a 60-second spot featuring Andy Cato of electronic music duo Groove Armada as a regenerative farmer.

"We partnered up with Andy Cato, one half of Groove Amada, to be the face of our campaign because he traded playing at nightclubs for regenerative farming by selling the rights to his music to buy his sustainable farm. So why not demonstrate the power of the new XGT battery by using gardening tools to create the sound of energy. No seriously, we made the song ‘Superstylin’ out of a soundscape of chainsaws, lawnmowers and brushcutters."

Ella and Emma flew to South Africa for a week to deliver the shoot in sunny weather, but they had to make the set look like Europe for Makita’s European market. The pair approved every part of the shoot including set, props, costume, make-up, lighting, sound, and so on. The film was directed by Joffrey Hans (YouAreHere) and then streamed to Ella and Emma who were sat in a boxed-off area on set to approve all the shots.

"This was a milestone moment for us both. It makes us grateful for our university course as it has led us straight into this job and we’ve not looked back since."

The campaign will run across 35 countries, including the UK, through connected TV, social media, audio, out-of-home, press, digital display and influencer marketing.
