Ready to bring your stories to life on screen? Step into the thrilling, creative world of filmmaking and discover what it takes to turn your passion into powerful visuals. From directing and cinematography to scriptwriting and sound design, you’ll gain the skills and confidence to craft unforgettable stories.

Work alongside like-minded creatives in small, collaborative teams as you take on key roles across every stage of production. Whether directing actors, capturing stunning visuals, or mastering post-production, you’ll gain hands-on experience that prepares you for the demands of the screen industries.

Your journey is supported by practical studio sessions, on-location shoots, inspiring seminars, screenings, and industry talks. Enjoy the freedom to pitch bold ideas and produce projects across fiction, documentary, advertising, and music video formats, building a portfolio that reflects your unique style and ambition.

With career-focused training in pitching, branding, and distribution, you’ll graduate with the tools to thrive in the fast-paced world of film and TV.

The Structure

Start your journey by taking on every role in the production process. You’ll work in small teams to create your first short films, exploring directing, camera work, sound, and editing. Regular screenings and discussions refine your creative instincts, while studying cinema history inspires your own unique filmmaking style.

Course Facilities

BA (Hons) Filmmaking students have access to a full film studio and green screen facility, includes industry-standard professional production and editing equipment, 4k cameras and broadcast standard editing suites. Cameras, lighting and sound kits are available for location and studio work.

Computer suites house networks of Apple Mac computers featuring regularly updated, industry-standard software for a wide range of creative applications that support all our courses, with equipment consistent with that used in the creative workplace. A purpose-built specialist library is open to all students and includes Digital Collections to enhance the learning experience as well as the University archive. Self service facilities are available throughout, supported by a dedicated and experienced team of library staff.

Study Abroad

Studying abroad can help Leeds Arts University students gain valuable experience, broaden their horizons, develop international networks and experience their practice from a different perspective. Leeds Arts University has a global network of international partner universities in 15 different countries. Students can apply for a semester abroad in their second year of study.

Accolades

Graduates or current students have worked on House of the Dragon, 28 Years Later, Sexy Beast, Riot Women, Sort Your Life Out, The Hundred Cricket, The Dumping Ground, Inside Number Nine, Vera, The Bay, All Creatures Great and Small, and The Great British Sewing Bee, as well as making music videos for Alfie Jukes and Matilda Mann. 

Career Opportunities

Graduates can find work across the screen industries in a wide range of job roles in camera, lighting, sound, producing and creative, development and research teams. Some graduates will build freelance careers within film and TV, and some may work for film production companies, studios, edit houses and major broadcasters. Graduates may also continue to postgraduate study.
